Here’s a straightforward guide to help you determine the authenticity of your jewellery:
1. Check for Hallmarks
What to Look For: Authentic jewellery often has markings or stamps indicating the metal and purity. For example, gold might be stamped with “10K,” “14K,” or “18K” to indicate its karat. Silver is commonly stamped "925", and Platinum usually has "P950" or "950."
Where to Look: These markings are usually found on the inner band of rings, near clasp of a necklace, or on the back of earrings.
2. Examine the Craftsmanship
Quality: Genuine jewellery is typically well-crafted with attention to detail. Check for smooth settings, even prongs, and a consistent finish.
Weight: High-quality metals and gemstones generally have a nice weight to them. Compare the weight of your jewellery to similar items.
3. Magnet Test
Gold: Gold is a dense metal and usually not magnetic. A magnet test can be performed to see if your gold is attracted to a magnet. If so, it might not be pure gold.
Silver: Silver is also non-magnetic.
4. Assess Your Gemstones
Visual Inspection: Genuine gemstones usually have natural imperfections, while synthetic/lab ones may appear to be too perfect. Look closely.
5. Documentation
Certificates: High-value jewellery might have a certificate of authenticity, or Appraisal. Receipt of purchase might also provide additional verification.
6. Seek Professional Evaluation
